Oakland Promise Mentors provide supportive guidance and encouragement to help Scholars stay on track towards college graduation. Gaining acceptance to and thriving in college takes work—and no one does it alone. As the first in their families to attend college, having the support of a college-graduated Mentor can make an important difference in a Scholar’s ability to navigate higher education and persist to graduation.
Oakland Promise Advisors provide Scholars with college advising services and share campus-specific resources to support each Scholar’s well being and development. Whether it be emotional distress, confusion over financial aid, or questions relating to their academic trajectory, Advisors are there to assess our Scholars’ needs and connect them to the resources that help them thrive.
We have established deep partnerships with numerous institutions to minimize the financial burden of college and ensure that our students are fully supported to reach graduation. These unique partnerships allow us to offer persistence services that are adapted to the needs of scholars at these colleges and universities. Our partners include Mills College, Holy Names University, the Peralta Community Colleges, UCOP, UC Davis (through their First Year Experience Program), and several HBCUs.
Professional Development Day
Oakland Promise’s Professional Development Day provides scholars with networking opportunities and exposure to career possibilities through professional development workshops and a career fair. In professional development workshops, scholars hear presentations from experienced professionals in industries ranging from film-making to finance, followed by a Q&A session to learn more about these fields. The career fair features companies and organizations from across the Bay Area, and allows Scholars to interface with prospective employers and expand the scope of careers they may be interested in pursuing after college.
