Sydney Saubestre is the Community Engagement Associate for Kindergarten to College, supporting K2C schools in implementing a college-going culture on their campus as well as community engagement around K2C’s CSA initiative. She is currently serving her second year as an Americorps VISTA and spent her last service year building a Family Resource Center at Ralph J. Bunche High School in West Oakland. Sydney grew up in a French-American household and relocated with her family to a new country every few years; she was exposed to a wide array of environments, leading her to develop a keen sense of social justice from a very young age. At the age of eight, she started teaching English to children in the Republic of Congo as a way to get out of English class. She’s worked with children in some form since. Sydney is deeply passionate about culturally competent education and income equity work and believes in every child’s right to follow his or her dream.
