Our vision is to triple the number of college graduates from Oakland public schools by 2025.

Program Overview

  • Multi-year scholarships through lead agency East Bay College Fund
  • Scholarships paired with persistence services such as 1-1 mentors, peer mentors, retreats, and counseling
  • Partnerships with over 20 colleges, including first semester free tuition and fees at Peralta.

Why this strategy?

  • Nationally, only 20% of students from low-income backgrounds that start college graduate within 6 years.  Through need-based scholarships & persistence services (including mentors & retreats), 80% of students from the East Bay College Fund graduate college within 6 years.

Our vision is that every qualifying student will have access to college scholarships of $1,000 to $16,000 over the course of his or her college career within a decade.

Partnering closely with East Bay College Fund, the Oakland Promise will provide financial support to address the cost barrier that discourages low-income students from pursuing a college education. Students at 2-year and technical colleges will receive up to $1,000 per year while students at 4-year colleges will receive up to $4,000 per year. Additionally, partnerships with local colleges, nonprofits, and scholarship providers will generate additional support to ensure students graduate ready for success in a career of their choice.
